David Shapiro

A specialist in modern and contemporary art, David Shapiro is an Accredited Member of the Appraisers Association of America, the premier national association of personal property appraisers of fine and decorative art. He was integrally involved in the valuation of the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) for Victor Wiener Associates (VWA) in connection with the 2014 Detroit bankruptcy trial. At VWA, Mr. Shapiro also works extensively on appraisals of damaged artwork among other projects. His appraisals are compliant with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), which are issued by the Appraisal Foundation and authorized by Congress as the standards for the profession.

Mr. Shapiro brings to his appraisals a significant background as an art historian. He is the founding editor of the online contemporary art publication Museo and has worked as an editor on several industry-leading art history college textbooks. He has taught courses of art history at such institutions as the Fashion Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, and The Museum of Modern Art. Mr. Shapiro holds a BA in Art History from Columbia University and a certificate in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts from New York University. He studied Modern Art in the PhD program in Art History at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
